I am currently "flirting" with the idea of becoming vegan. In Alicia Silverstone's book The Kind Diet, she says it's best to "flirt" with the idea first. In doing this, I am getting myself prepared for the mindset of being vegan. I'm coming closer to aligning myself wholly to becoming vegan. I find it a bit overwhelming right now because I'm constantly looking at labels on everything from food, to cosmetics, to hair products, to shoes because to me slowly becoming vegan means adopting the whole lifestyle. I do like fish, along with bread, which has dairy in it. At this point I'm slowly entering this lifestyle. I have one other friend who is a vegetarian and I want others to know that I'm not judgemental of those who are meat eaters. Being vegetarian and vegan to me means adopting compassion and acceptance for every living thing. I would love any suggestions on how to make this transition.

I'll have to get that brownie recipe. Trying cornbread this evening with soy milk and no eggs. I'll let you know how that turns out. LOL!

I was vegetarian and ate mostly vegan for over 10 years. Now I eat some chicken and red meat like once a year because I think there needs to be a balance, and all things are good. But the processed foods are bothering me and I have been flirting too with the idea of going back too! I'm glad to hear that you like her book and I'm going to check it out.

Hi Mary Jo,
Yes, balance is the key, although I stay away from all meat except fish. I have scanned parts of the book and it's something I'm definitely going to look at more closely. Keep the suggestions coming because I find it difficult to cut out meat products and by products completely. I totally agree with the processed foods bothering me also.

Hi Lori ~

Thanks for visiting Reverie. I noticed you are in Georgia! I'm a GA Peach...born and raised there. My family still lives there, and I am the only one who ever left and headed West. Fell in love with California and am here to stay, but I return to my roots often and enjoy my visits.

Good luck with your journey to healthier living. I'm a huge proponent for sustainable, organic living in every way possible. And I have been vegetarian, but I feel my body required additional nutrition that I couldn't get via this diet. I've found that moderation is the key. I still do not eat very much meat and rarely any fish, but when I feel as if I need an extra boost in iron, then I go for a local, sustainable, pasture-raised meat. We eat a lot of eggs, so it would be hard for me to return to strict vegetarian again. I have "The Kind Diet" and enjoy many of her recipes and mix them in with other traditional meals. Good luck!
